Biography
I came to ECE via a circuitous route. Coming out of high school, my plan was to get a BSEE, then an MBA. Once I was in college, though, this personal train to riches was derailed by my discovery of a love for physics. After all, have you ever heard of a rich physicist? So I mentally changed gears, and planned on a life of abject poverty while teaching physics in some small college.
After graduating with a Bachelor's degree, though, I got rather sidetracked - willingly, I must admit. I got married, then went to work in the UW's Quaternary Isotope Lab (this was another veer, swinging wide into the realm of geophysics). Those halcyon days were mostly spent underground, with the occasional side trip to the center of the Greenland Ice Sheet.
I probably could have happily spent my working life there, but eventually the QIL's director retired and the lab shut down. While I had opportunities to continue in that field, my love for the Pacific Northwest was too strong. I'd been Webmastering part-time for some sites, knew I had a talent for it, and fortunately enjoyed doing the work! So I decided the time was ripe for a (hopefully!) final change in my career's direction.
So there you have it - that's how I arrived at ECE. Come to think of it, this is sorta where I'd planned to be all those years ago! Sometimes life is funny, ain't it?
