Biography

Evan Goldstein dissipated his youth studying and then teaching academic philosophy at Columbia University in New York City. Contemplating the dismal job prospects, he then switched to electrical engineering, receiving the Ph.D. from Columbia in 1989. For about fifteen years he did optical-communications research at Bellcore, Bell Labs, and AT&T Labs, where his work centered on optical amplifiers, lightwave-switching devices, noise performance, and architectural constraints in multi-wavelength networks.  As the telecom bubble inflated, he sold out and joined the now-defunct start-up Tellium, whose optical-switching effort he co-founded.  He was Tellium's Director of Optical Networking Systems until terminated with cause in 2002, along with the rest of his group, for their association with fiscally unproductive activities involving lightwave-micromachine-based switches.  Evan has co-authored about 120 papers on amplification, noise, switching, and architecture in lightwave networks, many through pilferage.  His chief professional aim at present is to be a good teacher.
